‘Completely avoidable’ measles outbreak hits 25-year high in US

American health officials report that more than 700 people have been infected by measles this year, marking a 25-year high for the infectious disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Monday that cases had been recorded in 22 states and were mostly affecting unvaccinated children. Officials said the increase in cases is the largest since 1994, including 78 reported in the past week. There have been no deaths reported as as result of the outbreak. “The suffering we are seeing today is completely avoidable,” US Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said on Monday. Mr Azar directed his comments at some parents who have chosen to leave their children unvaccinated due to the unscientific claim that vaccines cause illnesses such as autism. Guantánamo Bay Prison Commander Has Been Fired

The commander of the prison at Guantánamo Bay has been fired seven weeks before he was to leave the job. Adm. Craig S. Faller relieved Rear Adm. John C. Ring for a “loss of confidence in his ability” to lead, the United States Southern Command said on Sunday in a brief statement. Admiral Ring’s deputy, Brig. Gen. John F. Hussey, is now the acting commander. Col. Amanda Azubuike, a spokeswoman for the Southern Command, which oversees the prison, said the decision to remove Admiral Ring had nothing to do with a recent news media visit he hosted there. She said only that he was let go after a monthlong investigation that was opened in March. Admiral Faller, the leader of the Southern Command, and Admiral Ring met on Saturday at the command’s headquarters in Doral, Fla., where Admiral Faller “personally informed” Admiral Ring that he was being fired. Admiral Ring “will be temporarily assigned duties elsewhere” in the Southern Command, Colonel Azubuike said. Read Full ...

The universe belongs to Marvel. “ Avengers: Endgame ” shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally, reaching a new pinnacle in the blockbuster era that the comic-book studio has come to dominate. The “Avengers” finale far exceeded even its own gargantuan expectations, according to studio estimates Sunday. Donald Trump to withdraw US from Arms Trade Treaty

US President Donald Trump has said he will withdraw his country from the international Arms Trade Treaty. The agreement, signed by Barack Obama in 2013, aims to regulate the sale of weapons between countries. The US National Rifle Association says the treaty amounts to international gun control, and is a threat to America’s second amendment right to bear arms. Speaking at the lobbying group’s annual meeting, Mr Trump said he would ask the US Senate not to ratify the pact. The US is the world’s top arms exporter. Its weapons sales are 58% higher than those of Russia, the world’s second largest exporter. Uber aims for $90bn stock market debut

Uber has revealed that it is seeking a valuation of $90bn (£70bn) in its much anticipated stock market flotation. The taxi-app firm has said that its shares will be priced at between $44 and $50 each, with the share issue set to raise about $10bn. As part of the offer it will sell $500m worth of shares to payment giant, PayPal. Uber warned earlier this month that it may never make a profit. The IPO price values the company below the $100bn some had expected it to aim for. As well as the original “ride-hailing” business, Uber is developing driverless cars, and has a food delivery business, Uber Eats.
