Frank Lampard: Chelsea job the biggest challenge of my career

Today Sports News : New Chelsea boss Frank Lampard says returning to his former side as manager is the biggest challenge of his career. The 41-year-old ex-England midfielder was appointed on Thursday by the club where he spent 13 years as a player. Lampard had been in charge of Championship side Derby – his first job in management – for 14 months. “I am not naive. I understand fans want success. I don’t see this as a risk. I am not fearful of the downsides,” he said. When asked if taking charge at Stamford Bridge, where he has legendary status and is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, will be the biggest challenge he has faced, Lampard replied: “Yes.” He added: “Coming here 19 years ago was a challenge. I had the radio on and some people were questioning whether I should be here for £11m. “I thought last year was a huge challenge.” ‘Not an old boys’ club’ Jody Morris, another former Chelsea midfielder, has moved from Derby with Lampard to take u...

Report: Kawhi Leonard Declines Contract Option; ‘Seriously Considering’ Raptors

Today Sports News In a widely expected move, Kawhi Leonard will decline his 2019-20 player option with the Toronto Raptors to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports. However, Haynes noted that Leonard is “believed to be seriously considering re-signing with the Raptors.” Leonard would have earned roughly $21.3 million in 2019-20 had he exercised the option. But even if he intends to return to the Raptors, opting out was a no-brainer for the three-time All-Star. The Raptors can offer him a five-year, $189.7 million max extension, while other teams can’t give him more than a four-year, $140.6 million contract. Leonard also may prefer to take the LeBron James and Kevin Durant approach, where he signs a short-term deal that would allow him to opt out again in a year or two. Doing so would allow him to ink an even heftier max contract in 2021 or beyond. Either way, the 27-year-old had no reason to see out the remai...

Copa America: Neymar stripped of Brazil captaincy and replaced by Dani Alves

Neymar has been stripped of the Brazil captaincy for next month’s Copa America and will be replaced by his Paris St-Germain team-mate Dani Alves. The 27-year-old forward, given the role eight months ago but under pressure after recent disciplinary issues, was informed by manager Tite on Saturday. Alves, 36, will also lead the side in friendlies against Qatar and Honduras. He has captained Brazil four times, most recently in a 1-0 win over Germany in March 2018. This month, French football authorities banned Neymar for three matches after he hit a fan following PSG’s defeat by Rennes in the Coupe de France final. He was also reportedly involved in a dressing room incident with his PSG team-mates. The Copa America takes place in Brazil from 14 June to 7 July, with the hosts taking on Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru in Group A. Liverpool can challenge Man City again – Mark Lawrenson

The only time Anfield was flat on Sunday was when the Liverpool fans heard Manchester City had gone 3-1 up against Brighton. That basically ended any hope the Reds had of winning the Premier League title, but none of the supporters I spoke to before Sunday’s game against Wolves really expected City to slip up anyway. By the time it was over, the crowd was up again, saying ‘let’s lift the team for Madrid’. There is still another game to play this season, and clearly it is a massive one for the club. That is the great thing about Liverpool’s situation now. Of course there was disappointment Jurgen Klopp’s side fell just short after pushing City so close, but it did not feel like a failure, or the end of the world. The 29-year wait for a title goes on, but they still have next month’s Champions League final to look forward to and a bright future beyond that too. Why I can’t see Liverpool falling away next season You only have to look at how many points Liverpool got th...
