The end for Obamacare? Trump administration says it will ask a court to throw out entire health law

The Trump administration told a federal court late Monday that it would ask judges to toss out the entire Affordable Care Act, a decision that cast further uncertainty over the future of a federal law that has extended health insurance to millions of Americans. Justice Department attorneys said in a letter filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans that a lower court’s ruling the health law is unconstitutional “should be affirmed” and that the “United States is not urging that any portion of the district court’s judgement be reversed.” A coalition of Republican-led states brought a lawsuit, Texas v United States, arguing the entire health law should be tossed out. In a ruling last December, U.S. District Court Judge Reed O’Connor in the Northern District of Texas agreed with the GOP-led states argument that the health law was unconstitutional. The judge ruled that the constitutional foundation for the law – the requirement that people buy i...

President Trump on Saturday started his four-day visit to Japan by declaring that Tokyo has a “substantial” trade advantage over the U.S. — and that he hopes a future trade agreement will rebalance the situation. He said that the countries are “working together to promote mutually beneficial investment.” and that they are working on a bilateral trade deal. JAPAN WELCOMES TRUMP WITH A CHARM CAMPAIGN, GOLF AND SUMO “I would say that Japan has had a substantial edge for many, many years but that’s OK,” he said. “Maybe that’s why you like me so much. “But we’ll get it a little bit more fair,” he added. “I think we’ll do that.” Trump has made rebalancing trading relationships, particularly with China and the European Union, a priority of his administration. Jay Inslee Is Running on Climate Change. The Issue Is Catching On, So Why Isn’t He?

For years, climate change was an issue of passionate concern to a few voters, but never enough to ripple presidential politics. The Hillary Clinton-Donald Trump debates in 2016 notoriously did not include any questions from moderators about global warming. But after an alarming onslaught of floods, wildfires and catastrophic weather, dire scientific warnings about the impact of a changing planet and a president who dismisses it all, climate change has moved up drastically in polls of Democratic voters’ priorities. In some surveys, it has equaled or topped health care and jobs. And that raises a paradox: Why is the only candidate making climate change the center of his campaign, who has rolled out ambitious policies and has a track record of achievements, Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington, stuck in the polling basement? Mr. Inslee, a two-term governor who served 15 years in the United States House of Representatives (where he was a prominent opponent of the Iraq war), is pol...

Julian Assange: US files 17 new charges against Wikileaks co-founder

The US justice department has filed 17 new charges against Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange, who is facing extradition from the UK. The latest charges accuse him of receiving and unlawfully publishing the names of classified sources. He was previously charged last month on one count of conspiring with ex-intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to gain access to the Pentagon network. Assange is serving a jail sentence in the UK for breaching bail conditions. The 47-year-old was found guilty last month after his arrest at the Ecuadorian Embassy, where he had sought refuge since 2012 over sexual assault allegations in Sweden. He denies any wrongdoing. How likely is Julian Assange to be convicted in the US? Is he a campaigner or attention-seeker? A timeline of the Assange saga The new indictment says Assange conspired with Manning in order to obtain and disclose secret US files and also exposed and endangered confidential sources in the Middle East and China. ...
